We took a recent visit to my Grandmother, who is in a nursing home. It turned out to be a pretty difficult visit for my children as it is always so sad to see so many people bored and unable to do anything about it. My son in particular was very upset about not being able to help everyone. So we have started a project so that we can continue "helping" even when we are not there.
I am downloading audio books that are in the public domain or that the copyright owners have given permission to distribute and copying the files to disc. In order to get the most info on one disc (to lessen the number of discs that I have to buy and to decrease the number of times the disc needs to be changed by folks that might not find this easy to do) I am using mp3 files. This means that I will need to make sure that CD players capable of reading mp3 files (most newer ones can) are given along with the discs.
The kids are helping chose what titles would most be enjoyed. For now we have been browsing through the classics at Librivox and the old time radio shows at RadioLovers and Mercury Theatre.
If you can think of anyplace or anyone that might benefit from the gift of audio books, consider giving some gifts of your own. Nursing homes, senior centers, assisted living facilities, centers for the blind, etc. might all be happy to get audio books for their members to enjoy. Call and ask what would be welcome.
